Commemorating Caesars at the Creation of the Roman Empire

This talk examines commemorations established at Rome and elsewhere following the untimely deaths of the two adopted sons of the first Roman emperor, Caesar Augustus.  Lucius and Gaius Caesar both died at the beginning of their public careers but after they were securely established  as the next generation of the domus Augusta, the Augustan dynasty. This talk examines a few of the novel memorial honors the two youths received with an eye to how the response to their deaths helped to define the place of the new Augustan dynasty over Rome and its empire and to connect the new regime to the Republican past.
