Neil Roberts (Political Science, Williams College) lectures on "Why Marronage Still Matters."

Freedom cannot be understood without its opposite, slavery. Political theory therefore must attend to the movement fromslavery to freedom. Neil Roberts has developed a powerful account of this movement by examining marronage, the flight of enslaved Africans seeking escape from chattel slavery beyond the boundaries of the plantation. In this lecture, Roberts will explore how what he calls the "post-Western" concept and practice of marronage—of flight—bears on our world today.

Sponsored by the Certificate in Social, Cultural, and Critical Theory.
