How Art Works: Empirical Approaches to Philosophical Questions"

In the Arts and Mind Lab, we carry out research on philosophical questions about the arts, with the aim of understanding lay intuitions about how art works. Some issues we have studied empirically that I will discuss include how we judge skill in abstract art;  why we fundamentally alter our evaluation of a work of art if it is discovered to be a forgery; and what art does (and does not) do for us.

Ellen Winner is Professor and Chair of psychology at Boston College and Senior Research Associate at Project Zero, Harvard Graduate School of Education. She directs the Arts and Mind Lab, which focuses on cognition in the arts in typical and gifted children as well as adults.  https://www.ellenwinner.com/
