A Brief History of American Jewish Gender with Sarah Imhoff
This talk looks at the history of Jewish masculinity from two vantage points: the familiar New York City, but also the lesser-known port of Jewish immigration of Galveston, Texas. These locations show two sides of Jewish gender: on one hand, American Jews valued healthy, strong male bodies and wanted to transform immigrants to fit that image of manliness. But on the other hand, when manliness has been connected to drinking, fighting, or violence, American Jews have been happy to buy into narratives portraying them-selves as not very manly.
