David Montero (Wesleyan '98) is an investigative journalist and independent producer for PBS Frontline whose work has appeared in the New York Times, Christian Science Monitor, The Nation, and elsewhere. He has covered religion, politics, and extremism from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan and Indonesia. He was awarded the South Asian Journalist Association’s Daniel Pearl Award for outstanding reporting about South Asia.

Every year major multinational corporations pay between $400 billion and $1 trillion in bribes to foreign officials in order to win business. These bribes help bankroll repressive regimes, patrons of terrorism, and governments hostile to democracy and human rights.

David Montero will explain how he spent five years traveling across four continents to document this secretive world for his book KICKBACK (Penguin 2018) - and how these payments are wreaking havoc by fueling conflict, political instability and economic dysfunction in some of the poorest, most unstable places on earth.
